Ils furent dirig\u00e9s par le capitaine du g\u00e9nie Launay. Cette premi\u00e8re phase nous m\u00e8ne jusqu&rsquo;au kilom\u00e8tre 140 pour une finalisation des travaux fin 1910. Les gares de Khomole, M&rsquo;Bambey, Diourbel \u00e9taient\u00a0 op\u00e9rationnelles et ouvertes au public, la gare de Gossas \u00e9tait commenc\u00e9e. Fin 1911, 128 km de voies \u00e9taient pos\u00e9es et les gares de Kaffrine et Mal\u00e8me-Hodar achev\u00e9es. En 1912, 91 km de voies \u00e9taient termin\u00e9es et les gares de Maka-Yop, Koungheul\u00a0 sont ouvertes au public. En 1913, la gare de Koumpentoum est achev\u00e9e, l&#8217;embranchement de 22 kilom\u00e8tres reliant Guinguin\u00e9o au port de Kaolack est achev\u00e9, ces travaux ont commenc\u00e9 en juin 1911.<\/p>\n<p>1913 marque un coup d&rsquo;arr\u00eat dans l&rsquo;avancement des travaux faute de cr\u00e9dit et les 9\/10\u00e8me des ouvriers indig\u00e8nes volontaires sont licenci\u00e9s. On eu recourt \u00e0 la main d&rsquo;\u0153uvre r\u00e9quisitionn\u00e9e, un doux euph\u00e9misme pour ne pas mentionner le travail forc\u00e9 impos\u00e9 aux africains r\u00e9gie par une loi qui ne sera abrog\u00e9e qu&rsquo;en 1946.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>La guerre vint porter un coup de frein \u00e0 l&rsquo;avancement des travaux avec le rappel du personnel de direction et de surveillance ainsi que du personnel de construction remis \u00e0 la disposition du minist\u00e8re de la guerre. Le mat\u00e9riel de voies non encore pos\u00e9es fut r\u00e9quisitionn\u00e9 et renvoy\u00e9 sur Dakar, puis quelques mois plus tard renvoy\u00e9 en m\u00e9tropole.<\/p>\n<p>Malgr\u00e9 tout, la troisi\u00e8me phase est enclanch\u00e9e sur les fonds de la colonie et le solde de cr\u00e9dit allou\u00e9 par le gouvernement fran\u00e7ais. Le 14\/05\/1914, les gares de Koussanar et de Sinthiou-Mal\u00e8me le 27\/02\/1915 sont ouvertes \u00e0 l&rsquo;exploitation. Le terminus du tron\u00e7on se trouve \u00e0 Tamba-Counda. Le 01\/03\/1916, la gare de Cotiari\u00a0 est en activit\u00e9, nous sommes au km 422.<\/p>\n<p>Les travaux reprennent d\u00e9but 1920, la Haute-Volta fournit 4000 hommes, ce qui donnera un effectif de 7000 hommes y compris les volontaires et les ouvriers sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9s. Pour ces 4000 hommes, c&rsquo;est du travail forc\u00e9, s&rsquo;y rajoutent ceux fourni par la colonie du S\u00e9n\u00e9gal.<\/p>\n<p>La gare de Bala au km 455 est ouverte \u00e0 l&rsquo;exploitation le 01\/10\/1921. Le rail est amen\u00e9 du km 458 au km 496. Le chantier occupe en 1922, 8000 hommes. Les gares de Bouigheul-Bamba (01\/07\/1922) et Goudiry (21\/10\/1922) sont ouvertes \u00e0 l&rsquo;exploitation et la jonction des deux r\u00e9seaux est faite le 15\/08\/1923. Tarif de mars 1945, CPI: 1F50.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Pendant la p\u00e9riode d&rsquo;octobre 1922 \u00e0 ao\u00fbt 1923, l&rsquo;effectif s&rsquo;\u00e9tablie comme suit: 8 officiers, 26 sous officiers, 7450 ouvriers ou man\u0153uvres \u00e9chelonn\u00e9s sur 160 km de voies restant \u00e0 construire. Malgr\u00e9 toute cette main d&rsquo;\u0153uvre gratuite fournies par les colonies, les comptables avaient estim\u00e9 pour la compagnie du chemin de fer, le co\u00fbt de revient de chaque homme. Ainsi en 1923, il s&rsquo;\u00e9tablit \u00e0 6 francs journalier. Sont compt\u00e9s la nourriture, l&rsquo;habitat et les soins, s&rsquo;y rajoutent les pots de vin fournis au chef de chaque tribu qui fournit les hommes de son village \u00e0 la colonie!! Quitte \u00e0 continuer dans le cynisme ( pour nous les \u00eatres humains du XXI\u00e8me si\u00e8cle) le rendement avait \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 quantifi\u00e9: en 1913, quand les volontaires \u00e9taient pay\u00e9s, le rendement journalier pour chaque homme est de 1,2 m\u00e8tre\/cube et en 1923 avec le travail forc\u00e9, le rendement est de 0.6 m\u00e8tre\/cube, Ici il faut comprendre des m\u00e8tres cubes de remblais ou de d\u00e9blais ex\u00e9cut\u00e9s par les ouvriers africains.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;exploitation du Thi\u00e8s-Niger commen\u00e7a aussit\u00f4t les premiers travaux, avant m\u00eame que la premi\u00e8re section fut achev\u00e9e. L&rsquo;exploitation de la partie construite fut confi\u00e9e au personnel civil de la ligne Dakar \u00e0 Saint-Louis.<\/p>\n<p>Le tron\u00e7on Thi\u00e8s-Diourbel fut exploit\u00e9 dans ces conditions d\u00e8s 1909.<\/p>\n<p>Le tron\u00e7on Diourbel-Guinguin\u00e9o fut ouvert \u00e0 l&rsquo;exploitation en d\u00e9cembre 1910.<\/p>\n<p>Le tron\u00e7on Guinguin\u00e9o-Kaffrine fut ouvert le 01\/11\/1911.<\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;embranchement Guinguin\u00e9o-Kaolack fut ouvert en janvier 1912.<\/p>\n<p>En 1912, 267 km sont en exploitation.<\/p>\n<p>Mat\u00e9riel de traction en 1923: 2 locomotives tender Decauville 11.5T; 1 Corpet-Louvet 16T; 2 Decauville de 27T; 3 Cail de 29T; 9 locos Mallet de 48T; 3 Mallet de 47T; 4 locos allemandes de 45T; 6 Coupet-Louvet 20T; 2 Piguet 39T; 7Piguet 38T.<\/p>\n<p>Sur le Thi\u00e8s-Niger, un embranchement reliant Diourbel \u00e0 Touba, dite ligne du Sin\u00e9, sera construite mais il n&rsquo;y aura pas de convoyeur sur cette voie de chemin de fer.<\/p>\n<p>Toutes les lignes du r\u00e9seau Dakar-Niger sont \u00e0 voie m\u00e9trique. Le r\u00e9seau \u00e0 \u00e9t\u00e9 revu \u00e0 partir de 1936. La pose de rails plus lourds s&rsquo;av\u00e9ra n\u00e9cessaire, le rayon des courbes qui posait probl\u00e8me fut revu, le d\u00e9veloppement du trafic imposait cette refonte. Les traverses sont en m\u00e9tal. Le charbon utilis\u00e9 pour le fonctionnement des locomotives arrivait par bateau dans le port de Dakar ou de Kaolack. L&rsquo;eau posa probl\u00e8me, elle fut pomp\u00e9e dans des nappes phr\u00e9atiques \u00e0 une profondeur variant de 150 \u00e0 300 m\u00e8tres, la traction di\u00e9sel amena une s\u00e9rieuse simplification.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>En 1950, le parc de traction comprend des locomotives Mallet articul\u00e9es, des Mikados, des Beyer-Garrat doubles, et des machines plus anciennes. S&rsquo;ajoutent des locomotives diesel-\u00e9lectrique fra\u00eechement arriv\u00e9es. Pour les distances moyennes sont utilis\u00e9s des autorails; la liaison Dakar-Saint louis est couverte deux fois par jour en 4h30 avec une vingtaine d&rsquo;arr\u00eats interm\u00e9diaires. De m\u00eame Dakar est reli\u00e9 tous les jours \u00e0 Kaolack en 4h. Un express hebdomadaire intercolonial relie Dakar-Bamako en 34h. Le trafic des marchandises est tr\u00e8s d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 en p\u00e9riode de r\u00e9colte des arachides: \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque, il peut circuler jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 40 trains journaliers entre Dakar et Thi\u00e8s.<\/p>\n<p><strong>La poste ferroviaire<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Elle concerne la grande art\u00e8re ferr\u00e9e qui relie Dakar \u00e0 Kidira, fronti\u00e8re du S\u00e9n\u00e9gal et se poursuit ensuite sur le territoire du Soudan pour rejoindre Bamako.
