Ce chemin de fer s&rsquo;est impos\u00e9 pour deux raisons: pacifier cette r\u00e9gion avec des voies de ravitaillement rapide et se d\u00e9gager des voies navigables qui ne l&rsquo;\u00e9taient que 3 \u00e0 4 mois chaque ann\u00e9e au moment des crues.<\/p>\n<p>Le parlement fran\u00e7ais, sur proposition du ministre de la marine dont d\u00e9pendaient les colonies, vota un premier cr\u00e9dit le 24\/02\/1881 pour commencer les travaux.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Une impr\u00e9paration notable, un manque de main d&rsquo;\u0153uvre qualifi\u00e9e, un territoire hostile, les fi\u00e8vres, les livraisons de mat\u00e9riels venant de la m\u00e9tropole qui n&rsquo;arrivaient pas. Tout cet amalgame contribua a un \u00e9chec patent.<\/p>\n<p>Le personnel civil charg\u00e9 des travaux sous la direction de l&rsquo;ing\u00e9nieur Armandeau lutta contre toutes ces difficult\u00e9s, mais la tache \u00e9tait par trop ardue. L&rsquo;ing\u00e9nieur Armandeau tomba malade rapidement, sera remplac\u00e9, et rapatri\u00e9 sur la m\u00e9tropole. De 1881 \u00e0 1884, cette voie unique et m\u00e9trique ne fut pos\u00e9e que sur 54 km, juste apr\u00e8s le village de Diamou. Les travaux furent dans l&rsquo;ensemble mal r\u00e9alis\u00e9s par un personnel inadapt\u00e9 et dans des conditions de travail contestable et d\u00e9testable. L&rsquo;encadrement compos\u00e9 de 11 m\u00e9tropolitains \u00e9tait sujet \u00e0 un alcoolisme notoire, \u00e0 tel point qu&rsquo;il fallut en r\u00e9voquer certains.<\/p>\n<p>Il faut signaler qu&rsquo;aucun chemin de fer des colonies n&rsquo;a \u00e9chapp\u00e9 aux rabatteurs pour fournir de la main d&rsquo;\u0153uvre \u00e0 la construction de ces voies. Pour ces travailleurs, la mortalit\u00e9 \u00e9tait importante \u00e0 cause de plusieurs facteurs: la maladie, les accidents du travail, le climat et les mauvais soins. Si dans les divers documents consult\u00e9s, on \u00e9value les pertes des militaires et des civils m\u00e9tropolitains, il est plus mal ais\u00e9 d&rsquo;avoir ces m\u00eames donn\u00e9es pour les indig\u00e8nes et travailleurs des colonies.<\/p>\n<p>Evidemment, c&rsquo;\u00e9tait une autre \u00e9poque\u00a0 avec tr\u00e8s peu de l\u00e9gislation dans le droit du travail. La m\u00e9moire collective ne doit jamais oublier que les noirs africains \u00e9taient soumis au travail forc\u00e9, r\u00e9gi par une loi qui ne sera abrog\u00e9e qu&rsquo;en 1947. Les 250 indig\u00e8nes du cru, dans la campagne des travaux de 1882\/83,\u00a0 \u00e9taient juste nourris. Quant aux 450 terrassiers marocains et 35 ma\u00e7ons chinois, ils avaient un contrat \u00e0 dur\u00e9e limit\u00e9e avec une clause de rapatriement une fois le travail termin\u00e9 avec un salaire de mis\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p>Pendant la campagne de 1893, on constata qu&rsquo;une pile du pont de Galouko s&rsquo;\u00e9tait fissur\u00e9e. Il fallut la d\u00e9monter enti\u00e8rement et la refaire sans arr\u00eater le trafic ferroviaire. Comme il n&rsquo;y avait pas de ma\u00e7ons chez les locaux qui habitaient les r\u00e9gions du Haut-Fleuve, ils employ\u00e8rent dix ma\u00e7ons Ouolofs du Bas-S\u00e9n\u00e9gal qui \u00ab\u00a0exig\u00e8rent des salaires \u00e9lev\u00e9s\u00a0\u00bb et qui ne s&rsquo;engag\u00e8rent que pour une campagne enti\u00e8re. Ainsi \u00e0 force de c\u00f4toyer l&rsquo;homme blanc, l&rsquo;Africain comprit tout l&rsquo;int\u00e9r\u00eat de monnayer ses comp\u00e9tences. Mais ne nous leurrons pas, les salaires \u00e9taient toujours en de\u00e7\u00e0 du salaire d&rsquo;un m\u00e9tropolitain.\u00a0 Bien des ann\u00e9es pass\u00e8rent avant qu&rsquo;une \u00e9quit\u00e9 salariale apparaisse notamment gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une gr\u00e8ve de 6 mois des cheminots en 1947.<\/p>\n<p>De 1885 \u00e0 1890, les travaux furent officiellement abandonn\u00e9s, plus aucun subside ne fut attribu\u00e9 \u00e0 ce chemin de fer et l&rsquo;exploitation ne se fit que sur cette cinquantaine de kilom\u00e8tres. Les civils Laiss\u00e8rent la place aux militaires. L&rsquo;artillerie et le 5\u00e8me g\u00e9nie reprirent l&rsquo;affaire en main.<\/p>\n<p>Enfin le mat\u00e9riel command\u00e9 en France arriva \u00e0 Kayes. Le colonel Galli\u00e9ni, avec l&rsquo;artillerie de marine, amena le chemin de fer jusque Bafoulab\u00e9 en 1888. Une disparit\u00e9 apparue car les troupes avaient progress\u00e9 plus vite que le rail et le ravitaillement se posa en probl\u00e8me. Pour pallier \u00e0 cet inconv\u00e9nient, l&rsquo;artillerie de marine posa une voie Decauville de 0.50 \u00e0 traction animal (mulet) de Bafoulab\u00e9 \u00e0 Kal\u00e9. Cette voie fut remplac\u00e9e par une voie de 0.60 \u00e0 traction m\u00e9canique et prolong\u00e9e jusque Dioub\u00e9ba. Les transports s&rsquo;effectuaient ensuite par voie fluviale de Dioub\u00e9ba \u00e0 Badumb\u00e9, puis par voitures Lef\u00e8vre r\u00e9unies en convois de Badumb\u00e9 \u00e0 Koulikoro.<\/p>\n<p>En 1891, le ravitaillement se fit de la fa\u00e7on suivante :<\/p>\n<p>Les colis \u00e9taient transport\u00e9s de Kayes \u00e0 Bafoulab\u00e9 par chemin de fer, de Bafoulab\u00e9 \u00e0 Kal\u00e9 par pirogues, \u00e0 Kal\u00e9 transbord\u00e9s de l&rsquo;aval \u00e0 l&rsquo;amont des rapides par un Decauville de 2 kilom\u00e8tres, repris par pirogues et conduits \u00e0 Laoussa, de Laoussa \u00e0 Dioub\u00e9ba par un autre Decauville de 5 kilom\u00e8tres, puis par pirogues \u00e0 Badumb\u00e9, et \u00e0 t\u00eate d&rsquo;hommes de Badumb\u00e9 \u00e0 Toukoto. Enfin, \u00e0 Toukoto, ils \u00e9taient charg\u00e9s sur les convois de voitures Lefebvre qui les conduisaient dans les postes ou aux pirogues du Niger.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/EWMEt57UYAE8rsG.jpg\" alt=\"Twitter \u092a\u0930 Troupes de marine: &quot;[#MercrediAuMus\u00e9e #EnVoitureSimone \ud83d\ude97\ud83d\udca8] Le  mus\u00e9e des Troupes de marine vous pr\u00e9sente des pi\u00e8ces issues de ses  collections pendant le confinement. Kezako ? \ud83e\udd14 La voiture Lefebvre,  introduite\" width=\"1200\" height=\"937\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><br \/>Voiture Lef\u00e8vre.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>L&rsquo;administration des colonies prit conscience des difficult\u00e9s du ravitaillement, mais envoya d&rsquo;abord deux missions militaires sur le terrain. Ainsi le 5\u00e8me de g\u00e9nie dirig\u00e9 par le commandant Marmier reconnu le terrain de Bafoulab\u00e9 \u00e0 Kita en 1892. Le co\u00fbt humain pour cette mission est plut\u00f4t \u00e9lev\u00e9 car sur les 24 militaires de cette mission, 6 d\u00e9c\u00e9deront sur place de la fi\u00e8vre jaune.<\/p>\n<p>La deuxi\u00e8me \u00e9tude, command\u00e9e par le commandant Joffre (qui deviendra Mar\u00e9chal de France) reconnue la portion Kita \u00e0 Toulimandio en 1893. Le commandant Joffre fut charg\u00e9 \u00e9galement de l&rsquo;exploitation de la ligne Kayes-Bafoulab\u00e9. Il r\u00e9organisa les horaires, am\u00e9liora la voie existante, le mat\u00e9riel roulant fut r\u00e9par\u00e9 et cette ligne fut remise en exploitation en novembre 1892.<\/p>\n<p>Le service fut r\u00e9gl\u00e9 de la fa\u00e7on suivante pour les trains de l&rsquo;exploitation :<\/p>\n<p>Un train par jour dans chaque sens, entre Kayes et Bafoulab\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Deux trains par jour dans chaque sens, entre Kayes et M\u00e9dine.<\/p>\n<p>Pendant l&rsquo;hivernage de 1893\/94, l&rsquo;exploitation fut suspendue sur la ligne Kayes-Bafoulab\u00e9 et sur celle de Bafoulab\u00e9-Dioub\u00e9ba ; on mit cependant en marche quelques trains de service, en profilant des p\u00e9riodes o\u00f9 les pluies moins abondantes n&rsquo;avaient pas trop d\u00e9tremp\u00e9 la plateforme. Le service de Kayes-M\u00e9dine fut maintenu en raison des recettes \u00e9lev\u00e9es qu&rsquo;il continuait \u00e0 donner. A partir de 1895, l&rsquo;\u00e9tat de la ligne permit de maintenir l&rsquo;exploitation r\u00e9guli\u00e8re pendant l&rsquo;hivernage.<\/p>\n<p>Anecdote piquante: parmi les divers documents remis au g\u00e9nie par la mission civile du chemin de fer, il n&rsquo;y avait aucun plan de la ligne.<\/p>\n<p>Le G\u00e9nie construisit les piles du pont de Mahina sur le Bafing, amor\u00e7ant ainsi les travaux de prolongement du K.-N. En mai 1896, ce pont fut inaugur\u00e9 par le Lieutenant Gouverneur M. de Trentinian. La voie ferr\u00e9e atteignait Cuninville en 1897 (km130), le km 168 en 1898 puis Oualia au km 174. Franchise postale accord\u00e9e aux militaires par l&rsquo;article paru au bulletin des postes de mars 1892 et suppression de la franchise \u00e0 partir du 01\/04\/1905. Lettre transport\u00e9e par le paquebot Cordill\u00e8re.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>En 1899, le rail fut prolong\u00e9 de 43km mais en 1900, une \u00e9pid\u00e9mie de fi\u00e8vre jaune au S\u00e9n\u00e9gal ralentit les travaux. Le pont de Toukoto \u00e9tait achev\u00e9 dans la m\u00eame p\u00e9riode. En 1902, le fleuve n&rsquo;eut presque pas de crue, ce qui emp\u00eacha tout mouvement de mat\u00e9riel de Saint Louis vers Kayes. En 1901, 28 km de voies furent pos\u00e9es, en 1902: 50 km, en 1903: 73 km et en 1904: 150 km. Malgr\u00e9 toutes les difficult\u00e9s, les d\u00e9lais d&rsquo;ach\u00e8vement de la construction furent respect\u00e9s et la ligne fut mise en exploitation jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 Koulikoro le 10\/12\/1904 sur 555 km. En 1905, toutes les traverses de bois pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment pos\u00e9es entre Kayes et Dioub\u00e9ba furent remplac\u00e9es par de traverses m\u00e9talliques (dur\u00e9e de vie d&rsquo;une traverse en bois local: environ 15 mois sous ces latitudes) et la construction des ateliers fut entreprise \u00e0 Bamako. Des alimentations en eau ont \u00e9t\u00e9 install\u00e9es tous les 20\/25 kilom\u00e8tres.<\/p>\n<p>En 1906, le G\u00e9nie avait termin\u00e9 sa tache, il laissa sa place petit \u00e0 petit \u00e0 une administration civile et en 1907, la g\u00e9rance du chemin de fer K.-N. a \u00e9t\u00e9 confi\u00e9e au gouvernement g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de l&rsquo;A.O.F. En 1908, le personnel du chemin de fer de Kayes au Niger fut presque enti\u00e8rement civil. En janvier 1924, les r\u00e9seaux ferroviaires de l&rsquo;A.O.F. \u00e9taient plac\u00e9s en 4 r\u00e9gies autonomes: Dakar-Niger, Conakry-Niger, Abidjan-Niger et Benin-Niger. Le 17\/07\/1946, ils sont regroup\u00e9s en une seule r\u00e9gie f\u00e9d\u00e9rale divis\u00e9e en r\u00e9gions.<\/p>\n<p>En 1905, l&rsquo;effectif indig\u00e8ne comprenait 260 agents pour l&rsquo;exploitation et 300 pour la traction, quant au personnel europ\u00e9en, il comptait 55 personnes dont 15 civils. En 1924, le personnel europ\u00e9en est pass\u00e9 \u00e0 124 agents. Le trafic voyageur est pass\u00e9 de 71432 en 1905 \u00e0 388634 en 1923.<\/p>\n<p>Le mat\u00e9riel de traction comprenait des locomotives de 10 tonnes, de 15t.5, de 18t.5, de 26 tonnes. les premi\u00e8res locomotives en service en 1882 remorquaient 10 \u00e0 15 tonnes de charges utiles. en 1901, 25 tonnes de charges utiles puis de 30 \u00e0 40 tonnes. En 1904, les nouvelles locomotives remorqu\u00e8rent des trains de 100 tonnes. En 1905, deux trains r\u00e9guliers de voyageurs circulent sur la ligne de bout en bout par semaine et les trains circulent uniquement pendant la journ\u00e9e. Certaines oblit\u00e9rations sont communes au S\u00e9n\u00e9gal et au Soudan puisque les voies ont \u00e9t\u00e9 reli\u00e9es entre elles \u00e0 Kidira le 18\/08\/1923. L&rsquo;inauguration eut lieu le 01\/01\/1924. L&rsquo;Atlantique et le Soudan \u00e9taient reli\u00e9s par une voie de p\u00e9n\u00e9tration longue de 1288km, le T.-N. (Thi\u00e8s-Niger). Toutes ces oblit\u00e9rations sont \u00e0 consid\u00e9rer comme des convoyeurs.<\/p>\n<p>Note: Il est signal\u00e9 dans le bulletin Col.Fra hors s\u00e9rie N\u00b010-1 que les convoyeurs ont \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9s en 1908.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Soudan fran\u00e7ais: Kayes-Niger, K.-N.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kidira-Bamako. A Kidira se trouve le poste fronti\u00e8re entre le S\u00e9n\u00e9gal et le Soudan fran\u00e7ais mais Kidira est sur le territoire du S\u00e9n\u00e9gal.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Aller,
